Normans a go-go.

   Posted by: Darrell   in General

Since the post Arsuf, Claymore and other Deliberations post, I have had a bit of a change of heart. (Yep, you’ve all heard that one before!!). I was thinking I’d love to have my Vikings all prim and proper and on the table at the WHW weekend this October, but, should I not consider finishing my Normans off first? By finishing them off I was thinking painting up two units of Pueri and then that would be that. Safe.

Erm…. not so safe after all. I gathered together all the unpainted Norman lead I have and built an army list around the mini’s that need a coat of paint as well as the painted variety. So, in the end I have two Pueri units, a 32 man unit of Liberi, a 21 man unit of Vikings (that may take the place of the Pueri), 24 Dismounted Milites, 13 slingers (the ones I have are all in the same pose) and possibly 26 Coloni with bows!! So much for it being an easier option!! Anyway, I’ve settled on finishing the Normans off and will complete the army with LBM banners and pannants, the best you can buy in the event you didn’t know!). No shield transfers though as I started without them so I’ll finish without them too.

I’ll try to keep you all up to speed on how things develope with the last units, but, I have to figure out how to post pics on this blog first! Duh! Yep, I know……

Oh, nearly forgot, pics of Templars and Hospitalers should ge in the Gallery sometime tomorrow :o )

Cheers,

Darrell

Claymore, The Battle of Solachon and a picnic

   Posted by: Darrell   in General

OK, it’s taken a couple of days to settle down after all the excitement of Claymore and our demo game The Battle of Solachon, which, if you have been following the latest posts you wiill know that we put the game on for The Lance and Longbow Society.

The game was a great success with a lot of interest being shown from many people, lots of flashes going off, that sort of thing which is always nice. It’s always brilliant to get recognition for games that you put on, even if they’re scenarios that you have written and played in the club, which is one of the reasons that it came as such a massive shock when we found out that we had won first prize for the best demo game at Clamore this year! There were a lot of great games on show too and I really didn’t expect anything like that to happen. So, it’s a big thanks to all involved; Dave Lancaster (Lance and Longbow Society), Dave Imrie, Jack Glanville, Brian Phillips, John P, Kevan G and Dave O’Brien. Hurrah for all!!

Overall, this years Claymore, the last to be held at Meadowbank before we move to our new venue next year was a great experience. It was nice to catch up with the many folks that you just don’t see very often (and of course the one’s you do!). As far as game go there were many good ones but the two highlights for me were Barry Hilton’s (LoA) Battle of the Boyne which featured some of the best scenery I have ever seen at a show and the Indian Mutiny game (sorry chaps, I was in such a rush to take snaps that I forgot to make a note of who put the game on!).

Buys? An Early Saxon army from The Beasties (Gripping Beast for those that are wondering), a few of the old Dixon Vikings to put together some vignettes as well as some Jim Sweeney inspired Shieldwall markers and a pretty penny spent at Grand Manner (Worth every penny for such brilliant scenery!! Best in the business) on the Lugg Vale Villa and some Cairns (ooh spooky….).

Oh, nearly forgot, Saby turned up at lunch time with a bit of a pinic……. and very nice it was too…… perfect…….

Cheers,

Darrell.

Arsuf, Claymore and other deliberations……..

   Posted by: Darrell   in General

Hi,

There has been a distinct lack of action on the Blog front and despite my earlier promises to keep you all informed of just what’s what I have been failed singularly in that task. So, soz……..

Soon there will be photo’s of the Hospitalers and Templers that were destined for the Arsuf game at Claymore soon along with some other projects that I’ve been playing with. Bad news on the Arsuf demo game front; the game is complete but my mate who had put so much effort into his side of the project has had a run of very bad luck and is unable to make it.  It just seems a tad trite to put the game on anyway without him in light of what had happenned. Sooooo……. the game has been posponed until future notice, but will be making it’s merry debut at some show or another somewhere in the UK soon. Look out for it as it’s a not a bad effort even if I say so myself :o )

The cancellation of the Arsuf game left a little bit of a hole in Claymore not to mention The Lance and Longbow Society’s table (whome we were putting the demo game on for) so after much deliberation and panic I managed to gather a group of rather fine chaps that were all willing to chip in so at least there will be a game as a stand in. This will be The Battle of Solachon and will take the form of Philippicus advance into Sassanian territroy in the year 586AD.  We’re going to be using WAB so at least we will all at least be singing from the same hym sheet. My thanks go out to Brian Phillips, Dave Imrie, Jack Glanville, Kevan G, JP and Dave O’brien all for chipping in with miniatures and support. It shouldn’t be a bad effort for one weeks work.

Now then…… what else have I to chunder on about?

With the rumours of the impending Shieldwall campaign at WHW in October to be run by Gripping Beast afoot I aim to finally get a wriggle on with my Norwegian Vikings. The two (yes only two!) units that I have painted thus far have been a bit of a labour of love so they are going to take some time but should be worth the end result I hope. I’ll be starting on these chaps just after Claymore so watch this space for pics as the army builds. Also, more HYW units, some Arthurian Welsh and ECW action should be taking place.

Darrell.
