With Saltire III fast approaching I have a decision to make about what to take. For some reason I usually end up painting up cavalry armies and for once I think i’m going to go all infantry.
A few years ago I recieved three Frankish horde deals from Santa. I have never gotten around to painting them up as there were so many other Dark Age/Early Medieval projects that I had/have going. So, solution?
I’ve made the decision to speed paint them up so watch this space as I reckon I can get them done in a four weeks and that includes pacing them between other stuff that is a priority. If Soapy’s reading this then perhaps he’s like to put another wager on this escapade of mine? :0)
So, Saltire III will see me place my 1500pts worth of BtGG Merovingian Franks on the table for the first time.

Mr Sweeney and I face off at Saltire I
I’m going to give myself a couple of days break and get to work on finishing the fourth unit of Longbowmen for my HYW English. ‘Tis a bit of a bummer that I haven’t managed to finish this army off by now and as a result it will not be seeing action at the WAB GT which is an all Late Medieval affair this year. Bugger! So, with that in mind I have promised myself that I will have it all tarted up and ready for come what may at Matin Gibbons and The Beast’s Havok! Event which is on April 19th if I’m not mistaken. I really love Martin’s approach to the days he puts on and my general enjoyment is of course helped by all the nice easy going players that these events attract.
Following the Longbowmen I’ll be letting my brushes on some Late Rus types which you will be able to see on the Blog instead of the Gallery as they will be unbased when complete.
Cheers,
Darrell.
At the end of Cold Steel I was handed a few of the new Gripping Beast Polemarch Successors range to give a lick of the old paint. This done I decided to take a few snaps. You will have to go to the Successors section in the Gallery to see them for yourself, but I have to say that the sculpting is great and you get the usual quality of pose that you would expect from the sculptor Steve Saleh (who did a lot of the Foundry Greeks and Macedonians as amny of you no doubt already know?)
Anyway, see them in their relevent section in the Gallery. Hope that you enjoy………
Cheers,
Darrell.
Hi,
Another one of our stops was Warwick castle, this time armed with my trusty Cannon Powershot. I took a load of pics of the Kingmaker exibition, which, as I understand it was made and owned by Madame Tousauds. Basically if you haven’t been to Warwick and are interested in Medieval wargaming or history…… Go!!!!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise you are missing one of the geatest exibits of Late Medieval culture in Britian.
Here are the snaps, I hope you enjoy them:

Unfortunately due to the intensity of Cold Steel inn terms of time I was unable to get any pics of ‘Guitar Hero’ Andy’s beautifully painted Welsh. One day though……… hopefully soon.
You have to see this army in the flesh so’s to speak as pics just do not do it justice. See Andy’s full battle report fro Cold Steel here (there are also pics of his lavish army on the blog):

Brrrrrr…… Cold Steel lived up to it’s name yet again. But then, it wierdly wouldn’t have the same atmosphere without the sub-zero enviroment…….. madness? Not at all…….
In summary I had a great day. The whole event lived up to it’s reputation as one of the best WAB days out there on the calender. So, how did it go? Very well indeed! For one Saby and I arrived in Worcester a couple of days early without any problems whatsoever! For those that know me will realise that this is not always the case and that there is a little black wargaming cloud that so often makes it’s presence felt whenever I attend or even make an attempt to be at an event. No sign of this dark canker in the firmament this time ’round so fingers crossed for the future

We playeed four games during the day, most of which utilised the whole 1500pts of our Age of Arthur armies, some smaller games but with the points cost of the average trooper in Age of Arthur we were still playing with substantial armies. Martin designs the scenarios so that they are (mostly) an uneven match and the scoring system (which may well resemble something like a computer model of the Big Bang) works out how well you do based on the performances of others.
Many thanks to both the GB team and Martin for putting on such a brilliant day and supplying food to boot. Add to that the fact that I was able to borrow an army from the Beasties (I did paint a portion of it for the Age of Arthur supplement so I didn’s feel too bad) and you had one very accomadating, fun packed day. Also my thanks go out to the four fine, fun and friendly chaps that I played. For a tenner you can’t go wrong!! Marvelous……
Feast your eyes on the pics, mostly of mini’s. I did ask each opponent how photogenic they were feeling on the day, thus only two pics in human form (George and Danny). Here you go:

Oh, I finished 28th out of 34. Not too bad in my book :O)
Watch out for part two of our little sojourn……
Darrell.
Hi,
OK, so no pics of my newly painted Norman Pueri units as the Scottish winter is being a bit lacklustre on the old provision of light stuff. When I get a chance to set up some scenery and lamps etc I’ll nail them for all to see.
Other news? Well, this week see’s me off to Cold Steel at GBHQ which will be an all Age of Arthur event and having missed Hot Lead over the summer I’m damn well looking forward to it as well. Martin’s events at GB Towers are always great and I love the way the scenarios are set out so’s that there is a deliberate imbalance and that players are scored on how well they do compared to others. So, it’s entirely possible that you could lose a game or two and still come up trumps at the end of the day. Good news for me really
).
Pics of Cold Steel will follow after the weekend. I’m especially looking forward to seeing Andy Hawes (Guitarheroandy for those who regularly hit The WAB Forum) brilliantly painted Welsh models. Pics of his army will be posed pending his permission of course.
That’s all for now, but watch this space for a flurry of painting action as the January kicks into gear.
Cheers,
Darrell.
